The United States Vice-President, Joe Biden recently made a phone call with President Goodluck Jonathan and APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari respectively to discuss the upcoming general elections and to back the use of the smart card readers for the March 28 and April 11 elections. This was confirmed by a statement on Thursday from the US embassy in Nigeria as reported by Punch.
An excerpt of the statement reads:
“The Vice President further expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational.”
According to the report, Biden also commended Jonathan and Buhari for signing the Abuja Peace Accord, which is deemed as an expression of commitment to ensure non-violent elections.
