The Assistant Coach of the Nigerian National Football Team “Super Eagles“, Ike Shorunmu told Punch on Friday that despite the expiry of the contract for the national coach, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is yet to make a decision on who will be at the helm of affairs of the national team.
This comes in the wake of Nigeria being recently ousted out of the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite been a past champion as Nigeria won the 1994 AFCON championship. Although, there is a desire to revamp the national team in light of the recent lackluster performance at AFCON, but according to Shorunmu, the delay in making a decision would only aggravate the situation and would not help the national team in spearheading to future glory as proven in the past.
He further laments: “We are still waiting for the federation to decide. Nothing can be done now. We have to wait until they agree on terms before anything can go on,”…..“I don’t really know what is going on now because right now Keshi is not even in town and we haven’t heard anything from him. So, in that aspect, I cannot say what is going on.”
Shorunmi continues: “It’s not possible for the team to be fully rebuild in the next one year. There has to be an understanding between the coach and the federation. If there is no understanding, it would be very difficult. If the coach has a plan or programme and he submits it to the federation. If the federation says no, what can the coach do?”
