In an interview with DailyMail recently, Super Eagle striker and West Bromwich Albion player, Brown Ideye said that his mother once almost stopped his football career as she did not want him to play football. He relates that when he was 14 years of age, his mother was constantly fearful that he will mess up with the boys’ gang and barred him from playing football with his friends. His mother even took him to stay with his aunt’s home eight hours away from their home just to avoid him meeting with his friends.
‘My mum stopped me going out with them. She was upset. Each time I told her I wanted to play football she would say, ‘No you’re going to be with your friends.” He continues ‘She didn’t accept. That’s how I left. I went to Bayelsa State then Ocean Boys. Then bam, bam, bam. When I got the contract in Switzerland I went back home, sat with my family and had breakfast, dinner, lunch, everyone happy.Afterwards she called me into her room and said, I’m sorry about everything, your dad is late and I am the only person who can guide you.’
The striker actually began his football career at Bayelsa United before moving to Ocean Boys. It was when he was at Ocean Boys that his team won the Premier League. Among other European clubs he had played with are the Swiss super league club Neuchatel Xanax and Netherlands’ Williem II Tilburg. He was a member of the Nigerian FIFA 2007 under20 team.
The 26-year-old player is currently attached to West Brownwich Albion.
