The Academy has announced the list of 9 movies that will be advancing to the next round of voting which will eventually be narrowed down to 5 nominees for the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Most of the movies were expected to be on the list, but there were also some surprises, as well as resounding absences. Some of the movies that were included are: Ida (Poland), Leviathan (Russia), Force Majeure (Sweden), Wild Tales (Argentina) and Accused (Netherlands).
The favorite film for the prestigious award is Ida, a drama from Pawel Pawlikowski that was also nominated for a Golden Globe and had dominated the European Film Awards.
As for those that were unexpected, movies like Timbuktu from Mauritania, Tangerines from Estonia, Corn Island that was proposed by Georgia and the biggest surprise of all, The Liberator (Venezuela), a movie about the national leader Simon Bolivar, also made the list.
However, movies like Two Days, One Night, starring Marion Cotillard, White God (Hungary), Mommy (Belgium) and Turkish Winter Sleep, that won 2 awards at the Cannes Film Festival, did not make it on the list. Sometimes in the near future, we hope to have Nollywood movies making it on The Academy’s Best Foreign Language nomination list.
