CNN and New York Times reported a few minutes ago that law enforcement sources knowledgeable of the situation with the two escaped inmates from the New York Prison indicated that one of the murderers, Richard Matt, was shot and killed by police in an area south of the Canadian border.
“Matt has been shot, he’s down,” Lenny DePaul, a former U.S. Marshal told CNN. “Apparently he’s been hit. Not sure what his status is at this point.”
The fate of the second inmate, David Sweat, was not immediately known, although the Times reported a second gunfire battle in the area several minutes after the initial one.
On Friday, State police said that new evidence found at a campsite and field gave them a “high degree of confidence” that two escaped killers were headed toward the Canadian border, traveling primarily at night. This prompted officers to concentrate their search north and west of the town of Malone, N.Y., 10 miles south of the Canadian border.
Matt, 49, and Sweat, 35 both escaped from the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., on June 6 by cutting through a metal wall and some pipes and tunnels, then crawling from a manhole outside prison walls. Malone is about 30 miles northeast of the prison.
