According to CNN and NBC News, escaped convicted murderer David Sweat has been shot and he is now in Police custody, multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation confirmed to both media outlets on Sunday.
Sweat was reportedly taken into custody a few miles from the Canadian border in New York, they said. The New York State Police department is the agency that encountered Sweat, a source briefed on his arrest said.
Senior law enforcement officials confirmed that Sweat was wounded but he is still alive and was taken to a nearby hospital. His health condition was not immediately clear nor is there any additional report on exactly how he was captured.
Law enforcement experts have stressed that it’s crucial Sweat survives so that officials can learn exactly how he and Matt escaped, and those who aided them.
“I’m sure he’s getting critical care very rapidly,” former Navy SEAL Jonathan Gilliam told CNN as the news of Sweat’s shooting broke.
The arrest of David Sweat concludes over three-week intensive manhunt for Sweat who was imprisoned at the Clinton Correctional Facility for shooting dead an officer who pursued him after a robbery he comitted and his prison-break partner, Richard Matt.
