The streets of New York City were painted green this past Saturday as proud Nigerians took over the city to celebrate the country’s 50th anniversary of its independence. The Nigerian Independence Day Parade took place in the midtown area of the city, beginning at 54th street and ending at the country’s embassy on 44th street and 2nd Ave.
The parade commenced at 11am, and at 2pm the crowd finally settled at the Dag Hammarskjold Park on 47th street for the festival.
Nigerian strolled around trying to outdo each other in their most creative green-and-white outfits and proudly flying their beloved country’s flag.
Various stands and tents were set up, vendors selling everything from mouth-watering Nigerian food to movies to patriotic Nigerian gear, enough to satisfy the nostalgic Nigerian.
Nigerian celebrities in attendance included actor Gbenga Akinnagbe from BET’s The Wire and the movie Lottery Ticket.
Music and dance performances entertained attendees, including a performance by dancehall star Serani.
Happy 50th to Nigeria, and looking forward to the next 50 years!
