The Super Eagles stunned Houston’s Reliant Stadium for a friendly football match between Nigeria and Mexico. The game had a great turn-out, with over 60, 000 fans in attendance, the atmosphere was energetic and loud, with several happy faces expressing the warmth and unification that the game of soccer sports bring.
The only observation with the attendance was that, over 90 percent of the fans were Mexicans, or Mexican supporters, and less than 10 percent of the total fans present were Nigerian/Supporters. This was obvious whenever the fans were cheering for their country; and hopefully, Nigerians will start coming out like other countries to cheer for their own.
We spoke to several Nigerians’ that live in Houston, and asked them why they did not show up, and here is the response we got from a lot of them. “Why do I have to go out there to pay and watch it, when I can turn on my TV at the comfort of my living room and enjoy the game”.. Oh well, I kept saying to myself, what a shame!!!
Just to add a little more to what we experienced at the show, Pascal Atuma, a phenomenal comedic producer, director, and actor was also amongst the fans that was spotted at the stadium. At the end of the day, majority of the fans had fun, and were at peace that the game ended in a draw ‘2-2’, and their team did not lose.
