Kye Allums was recently named one of the most influential transgender people in America by Times and the Basketball player was born a woman before he underwent gender reassignment procedure. The 25-year-old is the first openly transgender to play in the NCAA Division 1 and a barrier breaker and pioneer in changing official attitudes and policies in sports.
In October, for instance, the Arizona Interscholastic Association for the first time gave a transgender student the go-ahead to play on whichever team, male or female, that aligned with their gender identity.
Today, he travels throughout the country letting students ask questions about what it means to be a transgender and is one of the stars in Laverne Cox’s new documentary The T Word, an exploration of what it’s like to be a young transgender person.
