Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo made some remarkable jokes about the Regent of Akure ‘Adetutu Adesida-Ojei’ during his recent trip to Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas, where he addressed Nigerians in the diaspora.
During his speech, he made reference to the interesting Nigerian culture in which the King’s wife ‘the Olori’ was not put in charge of the kingdom after the ‘Oba’ died, but rather it’s the daughter, referred to as the Regent that was selected to fill the stool of the “Deji of Akure,” which became vacant after her father passed away. The former president passed these comments in the presence of the late kings wife ‘Olori’ who was sitting next to her daughter, now Regent at the event.
He said:
“It’s a very interesting culture, they didn’t put the Olori to look after the….. .. emm they have their reason and emm, this is a culture that has stood the test of time.. just wanted to get that.. some places it’s slightly different, but that is the way it goes.
Regent comes with the Husband of Regent. What I have never asked either Olori or the Regent is emm.. What happens when the Regent is on the throne.. whether the husband of the Regent can share the throne.. and everybody busted into laughter..”
