In an interview with Punch, Ex-international “Garba Lawal” expressed his concerns over the idea of hiring an expatriate coach for the national team, Super Eagles, especially because the Nigerian currency continues to be devalued against the US Dollars and any such venture will be quite expensive for the country.
He further explained that based on his observation from past records, there was no significant performance increase with the national team between when they were coached by a foreign or local coach. He opined further that the success of a team depends on several other factors such as availability of good players, good-luck on the pitch and most importantly, the relationship between the coach and the players.
“We should forget about those coaches. Once you talk about a foreign coach, people will ask whether we have money to pay him. People will count between naira and dollars, especially now when one dollar is 200 naira plus. So, it is not advisable to go for a foreign coach now, because you have to put money on the ground before he comes.”
The Super Eagles have been left in a lurch since Stephen Keshi’s contract has not been renewed after it expired following the World Cup in Brazil last year.
