An artist earns an average royalty of $0.68 per song from Spotify Premium, the advertisement free service from the music streaming company where subscribers have to pay $10 per month, Times Magazine reports, quoting from Wall Street Journal study on artists’ earnings in December 2014.
On the Free Spotify service where there are advertisements to subsidize for the listeners’ free services, earning is even less – $0.14. On average, the royalty paid under Free Spotify is about one fifth of what they earn on Premium Spotify.
The music streaming company is under pressure from artists and creators of musics to limit its free services in view of the paltry sum they are paid under the free services, according to Wall Street Journal.
Currently, the Free Spotify listeners can access the 30 million songs under Premium Spotify only with advertisements. Premium users make up 25% of Spotify’s 60 million active listeners last year, down from 28% from the corresponding period a year ago.
