Channels TV reports that a number of youths and women from the Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Friday shut down two flow stations belonging to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for about two hours. Both facilities was said to produce over 600,000 barrels of crude oil on a daily basis.
The protesting Nembe indigenes reportedly utilized placards with various inscriptions portraying their grievances, while accusing SPDC of neglect and disregard for previously signed Global Memorandum of Understanding.
According to the report, SPDC, has failed to provide the promised infrastructure including electricity, water and good health facilities for the community despite the peaceful disposition of the Nembe people to the company’s exploration activities for over 50 years.
