Most of us would instinctively grab a drink to quench our thirst after a workout in the gymnasium or hectic exercise, and almost everyone would gulp some liquid such as plain water to re-hydrate our body after so much sweating.
Researchers however recently reported in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism, that drinking plain water after an exercise is a bad choice because sweating drains our body of essential minerals such as sodium during the workout, which cannot be replenished through water intake.
Milk or milk-derived drinks is currently considered a cheap and more suitable choice after a heavy workout because it contains all the essential ingredients such as sodium, carbohydrate and protein. Besides the natural minerals found in milk, it contains carbohydrate and protein that provides the ready energy after its depletion through vigorous exercises, and help keeps our stomach full enough without the urge to binge on fast food or other less healthy foods.
So, if you didn’t know this before, the best drink one should consume after intense exercise is milk!
