A few weeks we announced that Kerry Washington was going to be honored with the Vanguard Award at the Glaad Media Award for her role in making a “significant difference in promoting equality.” Click here if you missed it! The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their role in representing the LGBT community in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner.
“…On Monday morning, people are going to click a link to hear what that woman from Scandal said at that awards show, and so, I think some stuff needs to be said,” Washington said before starting her speech.
The Scandal star then spent a major part of the speech talking about equal rights for all citizens and how the media can make that a reality. Washington also acknowledged the “access to basic liberties” that are denied to many citizens around the world, adding the following:
“Women, poor people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, intersex people…have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of other.”
