United States Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in a special communique released on Saturday, 16th May, said that US commandos have killed a senior leader of ISIS in a special raid in Syria on Friday morning and captured his wife, according to Los Angeles Times. The special operation happened in a town called Al-Amir in Syria. The ISIS leader was identified as Abu Sayyaf.
“The operation represents another significant blow to ISIL, and it is a reminder that the United States will never waver in denying safe haven to terrorists who threaten our citizens, and those of our friends and allies,” Carter said
White House spokeswoman, Bernadette Meehan confirmed that President Barrack Obama approved the operation.
Abu Zainab Hashimi, whose Righteousness Brigade has been battling both the Syrian government and Islamic State, said in a tweet on Saturday:
“Abu Sayyaf had been establishing for more than six months the Finance and Economics ministry … and he knew all that the organization owned in terms of funds and especially oil and gas resources.”
“The killing of commanders from Daesh and capturing others is a very strong message to many sides,” he tweeted, using the common Arabic name for Islamic State.
