Less than two years ago, Dennis, an adorable dachshund, weighed 56 pounds. Now, thanks to a diet of dry food and a walking regimen, the little dog now has the normal weight for his breed – 12 pounds.
As the Associated Press reported, Dennis who used to eat burgers and pizzas on daily basis, caught the eye of nursing student, Brooke Burton, who is a relative of Dennis’ owner. Burton was worried about the dog’s condition and persuaded her relative to adopt Dennis.
‘We should not be feeding dogs people food and overfeeding them and giving them excessive amount of treats. And just like humans they need proper diet and exercise to live a good healthy life.’, Burton told WSYX channel.
Dennis, also needed 3 reconstructive surgeries in order to remove the excess skin after his weight loss. According to the Columbus Dispatch, the cost of the surgeries was partly covered by donations from a GoFundMe account that Burton set up.
Dennis now, apart form being in great shape, also has a more lively personality.
‘In the beginning, you could tell he was very depressed, that he really didn’t feel good at all,” Burton says. “He didn’t have much of a personality. After he lost weight, this bossy little demanding man popped out. He’s into everything, he wants to play with everybody.’
