33-year-old Serena Williams defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 6-4, 6-4, to win her sixth Wimbledon title and consecutive Grand Slam tournament, beginning with last year’s U.S. Open and including this year’s Australian and French open titles, according to NBC News.
In Williams’ remarkable career, she has won all the major tournaments at least three times. She has won Olympic gold medals in singles and doubles and has won WTA Tour events in every manner you can imagine. However, what she has not yet managed is a Grand Slam by winning the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the United States Open – all in the same year.
Saturday’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Muguruza of Spain in the Wimbledon final has now given her wins in the first three legs of the Slam, which could make this year’s United States Open quite an occasion for the American tennis star.
Only three women have completed the Grand Slam: Maureen Connolly in 1953, Margaret Court in 1970 and Steffi Graf in 1988, according to NY Times.
“It’s probably the only thing she hasn’t done yet,” said Patrick Mouratoglou, Williams’s coach.
