President Barrack Obama on Friday, 6th March, signed an amicus (friend of the court) brief endorsing his support for gay’s marriage. The brief was filed by Solicitor General Donald B Verrilli Jr to the Supreme Court that is scheduled to hear challenges from States such as Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and others banning such marriage in their statues. The Court will hear arguments from the States on April, 28th. Concurrently, Democratic leaders such as former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, Senator Harry Reid and 209 members of Congress also signed similar briefs endorsing their support for gays to marry.
In his brief to the apex court, President Obama had this to say :
“The marriage bans challenged in these cases impermissibly exclude lesbian and gay couples from the rights, responsibilities and status of civil marriage. The states have burdened petitioners in every aspect of life that marriage touches, from the mundane to the profound”
This is not the first tme President Obama had filed such brief in support of Gay Marriage. He had signed similar amicus brief before in support of overturning the ‘Marriage Defence Act’ and during his second inauguration address in 2013 he uttered the following message to the American people :
“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.”
