One person was killed and two others wounded after a fistfight at a Sacramento community college escalated into a shooting, a school official and police said on Thursday.
All three of the shooting victims were male, said Sacramento police Sergeant Doug Morse. One man was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting and another was hospitalized, he said. A third victim had graze wounds and was not badly hurt, he said.
The gunman, who police said was of Pacific Island descent and wearing cargo shorts and no shirt, was still at large at 8:00 p.m. local time (0300 GMT).
Sacramento City College was placed on lockdown after the 4 p.m. shooting near the school’s baseball field. The lockdown was lifted around 7:45 p.m. and an all-clear was issued after police completed work inspecting each building and allowing students and staff to go home, said college spokesman Rick Brewer.
The incident started as a verbal confrontation which led to a fistfight, Brewer said. “Then one of them took out a semi-auto pistol and began shooting,” he said.
One of the four people involved in the shooting was a student but he did not say whether the student was a victim or the gunman.
Classes were to be held as normal on Friday, Brewer said.
Police had initially said the shooting was across the street from the campus but later said it was on the college grounds near the baseball field.
