A Nigerian doctor, Adedayo Adedeji alongside two nurse colleagues, Gemma Pullen, 31, and Margaret Miller, 54, have been accused charged with the manslaughter of a 32-year-old African woman who died from massive blood loss after travelling to the UK from Dublin for an abortion, Daily Mail Online reports. She collapsed several hours later while travelling in a taxi in Slough, Berkshire, and died of ‘extensive internal bleeding’.
The victim had reportedly been diagnosed with a condition which can carry an elevated risk of miscarriage but was not life-threatening. However, the victim’s husband said the couple had sought a termination in Ireland but were refused help by healthcare workers.
Police announced on Thursday that Adedeji and the two nurses have been summonsed to appear before magistrates to face a manslaughter charge.
A spokesman further said they are accused of gross negligence and ‘failing to take reasonable care of other persons who may be affected by acts or omissions at work’.
The trio will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 19.
