Usually people leave their domestic issues at home and behave themselves in public. But, in this case, the man on a British Airways Houston-bound flight decided to make it so public that it caused an emergency landing of the plane, NY Daily News reports.
The report revealed that 48-year-old Darren Halliwell attacked his wife on a London to Houston flight, as a result, the plane’s pilot had to divert the flight. Other passengers on the plane helped to restrain Halliwell from further assaulting his wife until the police arrived.
It was also reported that the Police refused to name his target in the alleged attack, but airport officials told CBS Boston she was the British man’s wife.
In a statement released by British Airways, their spokesman said “Our customers and crews deserve to enjoy their flights, and not to suffer any form of abuse,” NY Daily News reports. “This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, and the Captain took the decision to divert the aircraft to Boston as a precaution.”
The man has since been held in Massachusetts on charges of interfering with a flight crew. Police said that additional charges are possible. Halliwell is expected to be arraigned on Thursday at the East Boston District Court.
The plane continued on to its destination after Halliwell was dropped off.
