In an earlier report, we published the news of an alleged mentally ill Afghanistan woman that was beaten to death by a mob for burning the Quran, before her burnt body was later dumped into the Kabul river. Click here if you missed it!
However, according to the latest report by Guardian, the woman did not even burn the Quran but was falsely accused by someone who fabricated the whole story.
The investigation by Guardian using the mobile phone footage taken at the scene of the incident showed that the policemen who were present did not intervene and just watched while the mob attacked the women. Also, the 27-year-old woman, named Farakhunda, was not even guilty of the crime she was killed for. Finally, Farakunda wasn’t, as previously reported, mentally ill, which is the only reason anyone would think of burning a Quran at a Muslim shrine (unless she was committing suicide).
“Last night I went through all documents and evidence once again, but I couldn’t find any evidence to say Farkhunda burnt the holy Qur’an,” Gen Mohammad Zahir told reporters at her funeral on Sunday. “Farkhunda was being falsely accused”
The killing of Farakhunda has been condemned by the Afghan president and other officials, but also drew praise from certain quarters, including a prominent cleric who stated that men should be able to go all the way to defend their Muslim beliefs.
