The spate of raping hapless women in India has garnered international attention and hogging the headlines around the world, sparking outcry from an International women group. It seems like the frenzy has now spread to foreign tourists as five men were recently arrested after a tourist reported to police officer that she was robbed and raped by the men who kidnapped her. According to Indian officials, “Five people have now been arrested for repeatedly gang-raping and extorting money from a young Japanese tourist held hostage for nearly a month in a basement close to a famous Buddhist shrine in India.”
India can be a tourist mecca because of the Taj Mahal, a legendary and iconic landmark where a ruler’s devotion to his wife led him to built it in her honor. However, if such rape incidents continue to increase, it may hurt the country’s economy in terms of potential revenue generated from such tourist attractions.
