Supermodel Iman Loses Mum Two Months After The Death Of Her Husband David Bowie
The Somali-born supermodel’s mom, Marian Abdulmajid, has died, she announced on Twitter Friday morning.
“Saddened by the death of my mom Maryan Baadi. May Allah grant her the highest jennah #ripmaryanbadi,” wrote David Bowie’s widow.
Iman, 60, has not specified the cause of her mother’s death.
Abdulmajid was a gynecologist, according to Biography.com. She apparently named her daughter Iman, which means “faith” in Arabic, to steel her against the trials she’d face growing up as a girl in Muslim East Africa.
Iman’s parents, both activists, fought for Somalia’s independence in 1960, the model said in a 2014 Guardian interview.
“I remember when I was five how busy our house was. People would come in the middle of the night, meetings after meetings, and protests and all that. I grew up in the midst of all of that,” she said.
“And she instilled that in me. The fact that nobody can take your self-worth unless you give your consent,” she added. “She always said to me that there is nothing that the boys can do, because I had two brothers, that you can’t do, if not better.”
The model was still reeling from the death of Bowie, her husband of 24 years, who died Jan. 10 after a secret 18-month cancer battle.
She had recently inched back toward normalcy, resuming her inspirational social media posts early last month.
“‘Love & Gratitude,’ Iman,” read her first Instagram message to fans after the Starman’s death.
