The graduation ceremony this year at the Columbia University had a new twist of spectacle as one student brought her mattress into the graduation ceremony.
New York Times recently reported that Emma Sulkowicz, aided by four friends, and to the cheers of some of her classmates, bought her mattress into the graduation ceremony on Tuesday, 19th May to protest against the University administration for doing nothing to expel her alleged rapist and fellow Columbian student, Paul Nungesser for assaulting her during her sophomore year in 2012.
The University had earlier cleared him of the allegation after it investigated the case and found the sexual encounter as consensual. Emma has been carrying her mattress around the campus for the past years to protest against the University’s decision.
According to Malaysian SunDaily however, Paul is threatening to sue the University’s President and the Art Professor for defaming him by allowing her to carry her mattress around the campus as a sign of protest.
Emma Sulkowicz was a former visual art student at the Columbia University’s Art Faculty.
