Healthy Monday: Genetically Modified ‘GMO’ Foods are Dangerous to Health & may Cause Cancer, new Study Says
“Healthy Monday is our way of kicking off the week with useful health tips, information or news put together by our team of Health Consultants.”
A study recently published in the journal “Food and Chemical Toxicology” reported on one of the best-conducted and one of the only long-term studies of the effect of genetically modified (GMO) foods on general health and tumor induction.
Most studies on the safety of GMO foods follow the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations and have strong financial ties to the makers of these foods. Also, virtually all of these studies had used rats and were terminated at 90 days. However, this new study clearly shows that most of the harmful effects of GMO foods occur after 90 days. In this study, animals were fed the GMO corn for two years in concentrations and amount commensurate to what people would eat and what they found was more than shocking.
The animals fed GMO food died 2 to 3 times more often than the animals eating a normal diet. Male rats also suffered liver damage and significant kidney damage 2.5 to 5.5 times more often than the rats used for control purposes.
The most concerning result of the finding was that the females developed massive breast tumors at a high rate in the GMO fed animals.
About 80 to 90 percent of soy used in our food is now genetically modified, and women are consuming incredible amounts in a mistaken belief that this food item prevents breast cancer. The more frightening part of this is that almost half of all babies are now being fed soy-based formula.
This is not the first study to have highlighted the dangers of GMO foods, but this is probably the most revealing.
As we select choices from the grocery stores, we should consider the damaging health impacts of GMO foods, and carefully pick more natural options.
Have a healthy week!
