Comic books publishers have a long history of embracing diversity and using the comic books to educate the public about cultural differences, diversity and tolerance.
DC Comics has ‘outed’ popular characters such as Catwoman as bisexual and Batwoman as gay. Now, Marvel Comics recently had Iceman ‘come out’ as gay. Iceman is one of the founding member of the X-Men comic characters and has been in the comic books for over three decades.
The comic book’s writer Brian Michael Bendis released a statement about the twist after it was leaked, according to IGN, as reported in New York Daily News.
“There are thousands if not millions of stories of people who, for many different reasons, felt the need to hide their sexuality,” he said.
“The X-Men, with the conceit of time travel, give us a fascinating platform in which to examine such personal journeys. This is just the first little chapter of a much larger story that will be told.”
