Former Nigerian football great and goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare is reportedly being treated for cancer in a Spanish hospital. However, the type of tumor being treated was not revealed.
The ex-footballer who previously lost his wife to breast cancer three years ago, was a member of the national team from 1983 – 1994 and was instrumental in deflecting the assault on the Nigerian goalpost during the finals of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship in Tunisia, 1994 where Nigeria defeated Zambia 2 – 1 to become the AFCON 1994 champion.
He was also in the national team during the African Cup 1984 when Nigeria won the first runner up at the final. Among the football clubs he had served include: New Nigeria Bank (1983-1989), BCC Lions (1990), Rayo Vallecano (1990-1996) and Ecija (1996-1997). He moved on to join a Spanish club in 1990 and has remained there since.
