A researcher at the University of Georgia in the United States US predicted that if the current rate of hospitalization which is around 85% is maintained in Liberia, the outbreak of Ebola would be over by June this year.
John Drake explained that if the hospitalization rate is about 70%, which was the rate it was last summer, then the disease will progress beyond the second half of this year. However, he emphasized that it is crucial to maintain the current hospitalization rate of 85% which can be achieved by ensuring a higher percentage of those infected are taken to hospitals.
The study was published in Tuesday’s edition of the Journal PLOS Biology. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) based in Atlanta, Georgia also released a statement that as at 10th January, the reported case of Ebola outbreak is 21,000 and more than 8,000 had died from the disease.
