Jack Ma, the executive chairman of Alibaba Group and one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world just didn’t get to that level of affluence in one day but, actually went through a lot of rejection from companies before starting the e-commerce company, Alibaba, which attracts 100 million shoppers on a daily basis.
According to Business Insider, Ma who has an estimated worth of $20.4 billion. In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, the businessman revealed that he failed a college entrance exam three times and had to rule out pursuing his degree further. He then applied for 30 different jobs and got rejected as well. ” I went for a job with the police; they said, ‘you’re no good,’” Ma told Rose. “I even went to KFC when it came to my city. Twenty-four people went for the job. Twenty-three were accepted. I was the only guy …”
But, even when Ma founded Alibaba in 1998, it didn’t come on a bed of rose as well. He was met with more obstacles and criticisms regarding how to structure the e-commerce payments and get banks to work with him. The brand actually did not make any profit for the first three years, but Ma didn’t just sit down somewhere and fold his arms – he got creative instead. Ma decided to establish his own payment program called Alipay, which transfers payments of different currencies between international buyers and sellers. “So many people I talked to at that time about Alipay, they said, ‘This is the stupidest idea you’ve ever had,'” he said. “I didn’t care if it was stupid as long as people could use it.”
Today, 800 million people use Alipay. What a wonderful and amazing story of how creativity can change a business model!
