According to Yahoo News, trial began for a bizarre case involving a mother, Lacey Spears, 27 who is being charged with manslaughter of her 5-year-old son after she slowly administered his feeding tube with salt to a dangerous level and documented her son’s decline, up to when he passed away on social media, on Monday in a New York suburb court. Autopsy revealed that the boy, Garette-Paul Spears died of excessive salt intake leading to swollen brain, seizure and death.
All through the series of events that led to the boy’s death, the mother continued to keep followers up to date on social media with 28 online postings, according to Yahoo reports. The message she posted on his death reads:” Garette the great journeyed onward today at 10.20 am.”
Experts believe the mother probably suffered mental illness. The murder charge against the mother alleges that she killed her son “under circumstances evincing a depraved indifference to human life” rather than with intent. It carries the same maximum sentence as intentional murder, however — 25 years to life. The manslaughter count alleges Spears killed her son “while intending to cause serious physical injury.”
