Charleston church shooting suspect Dylann Roof confessed to police and said he wanted to start a race war, CNN reports.
Dylann Roof has been preliminary charged with one count of murder – though several more charges are expected – while investigators continue to build their case against Roof. As Charleston, South Carolina continue to mourn following the church massacre that left nine dead on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, the legal process moves on for suspected killer Dylann Roof.
Roof, who was on the run for approximately 14 hours after the killings at the historic African American Emanuel AME Church, was apprehended late Thursday morning in Shelby, North Carolina, and was extradited back to Charleston late Thursday.
Roof’s first hearing is expected to be held via CCTV link Friday afternoon. According to ABC News, South Carolina law says he will not be allowed out on bond.
It has not been confirmed whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Roof, which is legal in South Carolina, but if that happens, a family member has stepped forward to “press the button.”
