Modesty is definitely a virtue sought by many, and a reflection of inner simplicity and humility. We are taught that the pursuit of happiness lies within our wealth, stability, and success. However, who said it cannot be found in creating happiness for others? Well, pay close attention and follow me while I introduce you to Amobi Okoye, Indego Africa, and the great heart of Dikembe Mutombo. These select few can do great things on the basketball courts, football fields and in the court room, but when it comes to their presence, they are more recognized for the good works they are doing to enhance and improve life for others. Their good works can be measured on any scale. They have worked tirelessly to bring mentors, financial support and resources to enhance the lives for those whose financial means are lacking but yet, they themselves are content with the simple fact of just being alive.
Brace yourselves as we enter into a part of Amobi Okoye, one of the defensive linemen for the Houston Texans. He wears his heart on his sleeve and carries his mission on his back. His foundation has made a huge impact in the communities of Nigeria and across the globe. Through his annual mission trips to Nigeria, his main goal is to introduce American football to the youth. With the assistance of his fellow NFL counterparts, he is making that goal come alive and a reality to many. Through a partnership with the Katy Independent School District, the Amobi Okoye Foundation was able to distribute 30,000 books to impoverished schools in Nigeria. His passion is present through the various programs his foundation instills by providing hope to this generation.
L-R: Amobi Okoye, Dikembe Motombo, Tom Mitro
In this world, some people stand tall as warriors. Dikembe Mutombo, former Houston Rocket, stands firmly in that position. The 7’2″ tall Mutombo did not forget the place that made him to be Dikembe Mutombo. He has created a platform that has built a hospital and research center in honor of his beloved mother, Biamba Marie Mutombo. The facility stands with grace in the commune area of Congo to operate and function to meet the standards that is efficient enough to give quality to his people. Dikembe has also been instrumental with the NBA program “Basketball without Borders” in Africa. A program that serves as a summer camp for young people designed to promote friendship, goodwill, and education through sport. Dikembe reminds us continuously where his heart is. He sets the premier example of showing a light to others.
I can hear the drums being played and the villages singing with harmonic praise because people are rejoicing for their presence in their lives. The grand gestures presented by these men are so fascinating that you will get lost in their names and you become mesmerized with their good deeds. From Africa to the United States, they have grown their resources and built relationships to take back home, representing themselves as missionaries. They have journeyed through life as a driver, increasing the quality of life for their communities.
Are you speechless yet? Well hold on closely, the selfless actions do not end there. In addition, to the aforementioned individuals above, I speak with much respect about Indego Africa founded by Tom Mitro. An organization created to enhance the lives of women and uplift them to a level where they can function as entrepreneurs. Empowering Women, Indego Africa is “an innovative social enterprise” that partners with women artisans in Rwanda to drive forward, a sustainable long term solution to systemic poverty in Africa. Indego Africa, not only provides for the basic needs for these women, they help them to acquire skills that will enhance their earning potential. Indego Africa’s sought out mission is to “unleash the power of women entrepreneurs in Africa!”
They may have started out humbly with an idea that led to a vision but it has grown into a passionate mission that continues to drive them closer to their goals of making life better or a little easier for their fellowman. As humble and patience as they are with their visions, I can say emphatically, that Indego Africa, the Amobi Okoye Foundation and the Dikembe Mutombo Foundations’ visions are bringing life to communities in Africa. A continent that is so vast in natural resources and beautiful in nature but lacks in many other areas.
We must applaud them of their great works as they continue to execute their missions. Please join AfriPro Houston as they honor these individuals of high caliber at their annual Holiday Gala on Saturday, December 11th, 2010 at 6:00
