Law enforcement officials in Missouri are testing two firearms from a man shooting targets near I-55 in Pemiscot County after an 11-year-old girl riding in a car was shot in the neck over the weekend. Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell told KAIT that his office was notified at around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday that an 11-year-old girl was being treated in a local emergency room for a gunshot wound.
The family said that they were on vacation and had been driving south near mile marker two on I-55 when the window on the driver’s door blew out. The family thought that the window had broken due to the heat, but then the girl in the backseat began to complain about neck pain.
According to Greenwell, investigators initially suspected that a northbound vehicle had fired the 9mm round. And then on Sunday, the sheriff’s office was contacted by a man who said he had been shooting a 9mm pistol near the location where the girl was shot.
Greenwell said that investigators determined that the man could have been responsible for the shot that hit the girl’s neck if he missed his shooting target or berm. The official cause, however, had not been determined, he noted.
The suspect surrendered two 9mm pistols, which will undergo ballistic testing at a crime lab, KAIT reported. The 11-year-old girl was flown to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. She was released on Sunday. The family said that they planned to continue with their vacation.
