According to AFP, a girl believed to as young as seven became the latest child suicide bomber in the city of Potiskum, Yobe State when she killed herself and seven others and left scores of others injured.
The attack was targeted at a market in this northeastern Nigerian city and had an initial death toll given by witnesses and hospital sources as six (bomber and five others), but medical sources at the state-run hospital in Potiskum said two of the initially injured victims later died.
This recent bombing brings to fore the state of security challenges facing Nigerians as the rescheduled general elections date draws nearer and comes after Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan stated that his government had previously underestimated the capabilities of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.
