A drawing contest of Prophet Mohammed organized by a conservative group called American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) held in Garland, Texas resulted in 3 people being shot at, after two suspects reportedly drove up in a car and shot at a security guard outside the controversial event led by Islam critics, officials say. The incident happened on Sunday, 3rd May.
Two gunmen were killed and a security guard wounded according to NBC News reports.
The anti-Islamic drawing contest was organized by Pamela Geller, a conservative with a track record of intolerance towards Islam, according to Los Angeles Times. Geller is perhaps best known for her opposition to what critics called the “ground zero mosque,” a cultural and prayer center that was to be built in New York about two blocks from the World Trade Center site.
In 2010, she led thousands of people in a march protesting the project, which has since been scrapped.
“This is a war,” she wrote. “This is war on free speech. What are we going to do? Are we going to surrender to these monsters?”
Garland is a suburb that is about 20 miles from Dallas, Texas.
