According to Utilities, more than 20,000 homes and businesses in and around New York City have lost power as the electricity network grapples with one of summer’s hottest days, NBC News reported.
Temperatures crept above 90 degrees for the second straight day in much of the area on Monday, though it felt like warmer than 100 degrees as the brutal humidity continued to smother tri-state residents.
Air quality alerts were in effect for much of New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut as official urged residents to stay inside and avoid the oppressive conditions as much as possible.
Spokeswomen for both utilities say crews are working on the problems.
The city opened 500 cooling centers through Monday for those who don’t have access to air conditioning. City swimming pools also had extended hours until 8 p.m.
