A ferry which departed Igoumenitsa, Greece, on Sunday morning, headed to Ancona, Italy and carrying about 500 passengers caught fire while in transit. Intensive rescue efforts is currently underway to save the ferry passengers, according to CNN reports, and at least 150 have been rescued, but heavy winds and rains has been a major hindrance to the rescue efforts. The helicopter crews are airlifting two passengers at a time according to reports.
“We are doing everything we can to save those on board and no one, no one will be left helpless in this tough situation,” said the Greek Shipping Minister ‘Miltiadis Varvitsiotis‘. “It is one of the most complicated rescue operations that we have ever done.”
