The killer cop at Ferguson county in the United States has generated a lot publicity on police brutality and racial profiling and led to the resignation of the Ferguson county police chief.
The recently released video of the police shooting of a victim on the back in South Carolina led to the arrest and prosecution of the police officer. These brutalities were committed by human cops in uniform and they are accountable to the law. One would imagine if in a not so distant future, the human law enforcers are replaced by robots and such autonomous machines are not accountable to anybody and as such, no one would be able to prosecute them as they would be regarded as just mere killing machines!
A 38-paged report was recently submitted at the United Nations conference in Geneva on lethal autonomous weapon by Human Rights Watch in collaboration with Harvard Law School’s human rights division.
According to the report, the UN should ban such autonomous machines independent of human control because it can lead to accountability gap. As compared to a drone which is also autonomous, they are at least controlled by human and the controller is accountable to the law in the event of abuse.
“No accountability means no deterrence of future crimes, no retribution for victims, no social condemnation of the responsible party,” Bonnie Docherty, senior arms division researcher at Human Rights Watch. as reported by NBC News.
