Having a Cardinal in countries like Myammar, Tonga and Cape Verde Islands is almost unheard of. More so when some of the countries are locations where Roman Catholicism is not the predominant religion.
But, what Pope Francis did on New Year’s day broke traditions in which for the very first time, the selection to the College of Cardinals was expanded to other nations, extending the reach of the church beyond the sacred inner sanctum of Catholicism that had been dominated by white European for centuries. The Pope seeks to revolutionize the whole traditional-steeped process that has dominated the church for so long.
It seems that globalization is catching up on the last frontier of the ‘old world order’ and the Vatican is a well-known bastion for ‘oldies values’.
