A mentally ill woman was severely beaten by a mob of men, before she was set on fire, after she was seen burning copies of the Islamic book, the Quran on Thursday, 19th March according to recent media reports. The mob reportedly beat, punched, kicked and stoned her to death before setting her body on fire and throwing her corpse into the muddy Kabul river.
The parents of the 27-year-old woman who was later identified as Farkhunda, said that their daughter had suffered mental illness for many years.
The Kabul police head in charge of criminal investigation, General Farid Afzali confirmed this incident with AFP.
“A woman burned a copy of the Koran in the Shahi Doshamshira neighbourhood. She was killed. The woman’s body was then thrown into the Kabul River”.
The police are currently investigating the case, however, four suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the killing, according to a spokesman of the Ministry of Interior.
