Nonso Odo, a 30 year old Nigerian man who currently resides in Johannesburg, was allegedly killed while in police custody in South Africa yesterday, July 23rd, 2015.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Union in South Africa, Mr Emeka Ezinteje, Nonso who was a barber got into an altercation with another Nigerian at a business center in Hillbrow, Johannesburg. The other Nigerian stopped a police patrol team and the barber ran on seeing the patrol team. 30 minutes after the police patrol team went after the barber, they came back with his lifeless body.
According to Ezinteje:
After the quarrel, the fellow Nigerian stopped a police patrol team. The barber ran when he saw the patrol team. The police patrol went after the victim; 30 minutes later, the police brought back the lifeless body of the barber. Not satisfied with the police report, some members of the union went to see the corpse in hospital.
The South African police insists that by the time the police got to Nonso he was already exhausted and gasping for breath and later pronounced dead at the hospital. But, contrary reports claim that Odo was beaten to death. An autopsy has been requested by the union to ascertain the cause of Odo’s death.
